How to Stay Cool in the Hot Weather: A Holistic Interior Guide

I am loving this beautiful weather we’re experiencing but as summer temperatures continue to rise across the UK, many of us are feeling the effects of the heat in our homes. Unlike countries built for hot climates, UK houses often retain warmth, making it hard to stay cool – especially at night!

As a holistic interior designer, I believe your home should support your physical, emotional and energetic wellbeing all year round. So when it’s really hot and the air feels heavy, it’s time to adapt your space with seasonal shifts that promote calm and comfort.

Here are my top holistic interior design tips to help you stay cool, refreshed and comfortable this summer:

1. Invite Natural Airflow

Open windows strategically: In the early morning and late evening, open your windows wide to allow fresh, cooler air to circulate. This helps flush out stagnant, warm air built up overnight.

However, you’ll need to block the midday heat – once the sun rises higher, close your curtains or blinds, especially on south-facing windows. Light-coloured or reflective blackout blinds work well to reduce indoor temperatures naturally.

Cross-ventilation is key: Open windows on opposite sides of your home if possible to create a natural breeze. Use interior doors wisely to direct airflow through living spaces.

2. Choose Cooling Natural Materials

  • Opt for linen or organic cotton for bedding, curtains and cushions. These breathable, moisture-wicking fabrics help to regulate body temperature
  • Swap heavy winter rugs for lightweight woven jute or seagrass mats
  • Consider bamboo or rattan furniture for their naturally cooling properties and laid-back summer aesthetic

These materials not only cool your space but also bring a sense of grounded simplicity and nature indoors.

3. Harness the Power of Plants

Houseplants do more than just look pretty – many varieties can help purify the air and regulate humidity in your home.

Look for:

  • Aloe vera – cooling, air-purifying and can also soothe sunburn
  • Areca palm – naturally humidifies dry indoor air
  • Snake plant – releases oxygen at night – perfect for bedrooms

Group plants together to create a mini indoor oasis. The green energy they offer supports your nervous system, helping you stay calm when the heat rises.

4. Create a Hydrating Home Ritual

  • Keep a large bottle or carafe of water with cucumber or mint on your desk or coffee table to remind you to stay hydrated
  • Use a reusable mist spray bottle to lightly refresh your face, plants and linens.
  • Drink cooling herbal teas like peppermint or hibiscus, which can be enjoyed hot or cold and help lower internal body temperature.

5. Calm the Energy with Light and Scent

Too much brightness and stimulation can increase feelings of heat and restlessness.

  • Dim artificial lighting during the day and use warm-toned lamps in the evening to mimic sunset and prepare your body for sleep
  • Diffuse cooling essential oils like peppermint, lavender or eucalyptus to cleanse the space and refresh your senses
  • Use crystals like selenite or blue calcite to absorb excess energetic heat and bring calming clarity to your rooms

6. Cool Down Before Bed for Better Sleep

Hot nights can seriously disrupt your sleep – which as we know is a key factor in overall wellbeing!

  • Keep your bedroom curtains closed all day to prevent heat build-up
  • Pop your pillowcases in the freezer for 30 minutes before bed for a quick cooling hack
  • Use a low, quiet fan with a bowl of ice in front of it to circulate cool, moist air
  • Keep bedding light and breathable – a top sheet might be all you need on the hottest nights

7. Mindful Layout and Movement

In holistic design, we always consider the flow of energy (or chi). In summer, aim for lightness, openness and ease:

  • Clear clutter to promote better air circulation and mental clarity
  • Rearrange furniture if needed to allow for better breezes or shaded areas
  • Create a dedicated space to rest and unwind – a summer reading nook, a cool floor cushion area or a hammock in the garden

Alignment with nature, mindful design choices and simple sensory rituals can help keep your home healthy and cool during the hot summer months. Your home should feel like a sanctuary – one that supports your wellbeing in every season.

By making small but intentional changes, you can transform your space into a calming, cooling retreat that nourishes body, mind and soul.
