The importance of sleep: how to create the perfect bedroom

I’m often surprised how sleep can be undervalued yet it is one of the most vital aspects of our health and wellbeing. Poor sleep can impact everything from mood and concentration to immune function and long term health. As a holistic interior designer based near Exeter, I believe that our bedroom environment plays a crucial role in the quality of our sleep. By making intentional changes to your space, you can create a calming sanctuary that promotes deep and restorative rest.

Why Sleep Matters

Sleep isn’t just about feeling rested – it supports our mental, emotional, and physical health. Good quality sleep helps:

  • Regulate stress and anxiety
  • Improve memory and focus
  • Strengthen the immune system
  • Balance hormones and metabolism
  • Reduce the risk of chronic health conditions

Achieving enough good quality and healing sleep requires more than just a comfortable bed. It starts with a relaxing and well-designed bedroom.

How to Create a Bedroom for Better Sleep

1. Declutter & Create a Calm Atmosphere

Clutter is visually and mentally overstimulating, making it harder to unwind. Keep surfaces clear, tidy away unnecessary items and embrace more minimalist design in the bedroom to encourage relaxation.

2. Choose a Supportive Mattress & Natural Bedding

Your mattress is the foundation of good sleep and it is worth investing in a decent one! Opt for a high-quality, supportive mattress suited to your body’s needs. Pair it with bedding made from natural materials such as organic cotton, linen or bamboo which are breathable and free from harsh chemicals that can affect sleep quality.

3. Set the Right Temperature

The ideal temperature for sleeping is around 16-18°C. Good airflow will help regulate your body temperature throughout the night.

4. Use Soothing Colours

Colours affect mood and energy. Soft, muted tones like earthy neutrals, gentle blues, greens, or lavender create a tranquil, sleep-friendly environment. Avoid harsh, bright colours that can be over-stimulating.

5. Embrace Natural Elements & Feng Shui

Bringing nature into your space enhances relaxation. Consider:
Plants like lavender, snake plants and peace lilies for cleaner air and soothing energy
Crystals such as amethyst or moonstone for calm and protection
Water features (or imagery of water) to encourage emotional balance

From a Feng Shui perspective, position your bed in the “command position” (diagonal from the door but not directly in line with it). Avoid placing the bed under a window to feel more grounded and supported.

6. Enhance the Senses: Aromas, Lighting & Quietness

Aromatherapy:

Scents like lavender, chamomile and sandalwood promote relaxation. Use an essential oil diffuser, pillow spray or try this Night Time Remedies to Roll, £15 by Neal’s Yard – a soothing bedtime aromatherapy blend in a handy roll-on bottle.

Lighting: Avoid harsh overhead lighting and choose warm, dimmable lamps to the side of the bed and avoid blue light from screens before bed. If you prefer complete darkness but you don’t have black-out curtains, a comfortable eye mask is an effective alternative. This Bamboo Eye Mask by Panda Urban is made from 100% certified organic bamboo which is naturally antibacterial and helps to protect against skin irritation and allergies making it suitable for those who suffer from eczema and sensitive skin.

Quietness: Use heavy curtains, rugs or a white noise machine to block out disruptive sounds. Consider wearing comfortable ear plugs at night if there are noises disrupting your sleep.

Why a comfortable bedroom is so important…

Your bedroom should be a retreat. It should be an oasis where you can fully relax and recharge. By making mindful, holistic design choices, you can improve your sleep quality and, in turn, enhance your overall wellbeing.
